Español 2
¡Hola! ¿Cómo están? Bienvenido a mi DP. Me gusta la clase de español mucho porque me interesan las lenguas. Mi maestra, Becca Katz, es muy cómica y los trabajos son muy interesantes. ¡Estoy muy emocionada por este año!
¡Voy a Sobrevivir! I Will Survive!
Lake Atitlan in Guatemala
The purpose of this project was to learn in depth about a specific country and then write survival guides in order to help others navigate this country should they ever choose to visit. In order to accomplish this task, we must research the country, write a guide, speak with a country contact about that guide, and then finalize it. After, we spent time writing out skits in order to practice navigating various scenarios in our countries. At the exhibition, we spent the first half of our presentation time showing the pubic our guides and the second half acting out the skits. The country I chose to research was Guatemala.

Reflection
The most difficult part of this project was when I wrote the guide because I wrote the guide by hand. It was a very long process. The part of this project that was the most fun was acting out our skit and watching the other skits. I am proud of this guide because I finished it on time and the product was far better than I had expected. I learned about the language of Guatemala and the customs of that country. It was a very interesting and good project for me.

Videos Ridículos
Have you ever watched a music video/parody that helped you learn a concept better? They are very popular in our class and we tend to watch a lot. Because of this, Becca decided that our next project would be to create our own videos in order to help others learn Spanish too. For this project, I worked with my classmates Helen and Elijah to create a parody of Dr. Seuss's book Green Eggs and Ham with a bit of a twist: Los Totopos con Queso! This project was really fun and I hope it will help others on their quests to learn Spanish.

The most difficult part of this project was writing the script. We needed to write an original script but needed to keep the format of Green Eggs and Ham. We needed rhyme and original characters as well, but when we started to write, it went well. The part that was most fun was filming the video. Working with Helen and Elijah was very fun as well.
I am proud of the final work of our video. In my opinion, the video is fun and went very well, and that is important in any project. I learned how difficult filming a video is, and how fun filming is as well.

Project Reflection
This project was a very interesting one. That would be due in part to the fact that I'd never heard of the term corrido until this semester. A corrido is a mexican ballad depicting a particular event in history or conveying a message to the listener. After spending a couple of weeks looking at corridos in general, each student was asked to find their own corrido to research and then write about in a report and a new corrido. The corrido I chose to research for this project was the Corrido de Rosita Alvirez, the tale of a young Mexican woman in traditional Mexican society who defied her mother's wishes and attended a dance. While there, she flirted with a man and then rejected his offer to dance. Her public disrespect caused him to shoot her three times, killing her in the process. This really bothered me and so I wanted to write a corrido on her but when I attempted to research her, I couldn't find much. My focus then changed to a depiction of the evolution of women's right in Mexico, how things had changed from a time when shooting a young woman for her disrespect was acceptable to the balance of gender equality in Mexico today.
For my project, I wanted to create something that represented the passage of time throughout the course of my corrido. At first I expected that this would take the form of an animated piece but since I don't have ready access to a camera and the program I was attempting to learn was very complex, I was forced to change the format. Therefore I created a clock out of cardboard, with two faces. On the back face I wrote each stanza of the corrido. On the front face, I wrote "Derechos de las Mujeres" and had a window cut out where the stanzas would show through. I then cut slits into one to make turning the faces easier so that other stanzas of my corrido could be viewed. I painted the cardboard and added designs to add a sort of feminist touch to the project and then attatched the faces to the clock with a pin.
During the course of this project we learned a lot of vocabulary and we learned how to speak and write in the past tenses of Spanish: the preterite and the imperfect. This was somewhat tricky because we had so much to learn and it was all learned in a very short period of time. I think I'm going to have to work on these concepts much more before I become really confident in them but I'm sure it will make more sense as I apply the concepts more. I also learned several things about Mexican-American history, specifically about the Mexican Revolution. This was a revolution caused by a very large rift between social classes and poor treatment of the lower class primarily though among other things. I learned that this was really the starting point of women's rights in Mexico, as the women marched with men in order to help take care of them. I learned also that traditional life in Mexico, while slowly revolutionizing, still has taken more time than American life. An American woman is more likely to lead a more modernized lifestyle than a Mexican woman and this can be shown in the fact that women gained the right to vote in 1957 in Mexico, as opposed to 1920 in America.
The most challenging part of this project for me was probably writing my report because I wanted to do a very good job but I only had a short period of time in which to do so and I was working with two new tenses and had to figure out how to use them as I wrote my report. Additionally, I didn't find most of my useful resources until a day before the report was due, so I had to make claims that I was fairly certain of, but had no evidence to support those claims. However, in the end I did manage to find a number of useful sources and was therefore able to complete the report with a decent amount of confidence in it. This was a very fun project and I'd definitely recommend it to others!
